This is frankly bizarre. Gitlin simply ignores the most important element in the Democratic equation: the emerging majority in many states and eventually the country of persons who are "not white." We're entering a different world, one that doesn't privilege liberal white guys and Gitlin has simply missed it.
By the way, the moral force of the '60s movements Gitlin and the Right also despise was the Black freedom struggle. They never got that it was this impulse, to which they were peripheral, that created the cultural context for all else.

MJ -- you broke the rules in this one. No telling the truth about who is an obstacle to peace is allowed. That's anti-Semitism.
Thanks, again, for trying to broaden a discussion few dare have.

Let me pile on to add that the writer is making a ridiculous mistake. No war here -- there's a problem of small stateless groups who want to kill people. Numerous societies have overcome such threats. This only happens if a) you understand the causes, b) remedy what can be remedied, c) provide alternative paths to the alienated and d) then use law enforcement controls on the small residue. That is: do the absolute opposite of what our rulers are doing.

The Iraq war, and most U.S. influence in the Middle East, is over. Caput. Stratfor says so. Not exactly a raving radical source.

I wish I saw someone in this thread pointing out the obvious about Joe's Maxine Waters reference: he is promising to deliver CT from uppity Black people (now that it turned out he couldn't win by getting their ministers to deliver him their passive vote.) In addition to numerous other faults, the guy is a classic white racist pol.
