- : Born to a daughter of immigrants and a failed priest, I am the author of thousands of pages of unpublished treasures, some of which are collected at Radiant Days. I have been a pizza delivery driver, political activist, radio news reporter, student of philosophy, executive secretary, photographer, vagabond in Paris, Visual Basic programmer and web designer. I have lived in Ohio, New Mexico, San Francisco, New York, Paris and Morocco. I have visited 49 states and 14 countries. I dislike hospitals and airports, television and air conditioning. I prefer marginal neighborhoods and poor countries. I feel that Americans are living in a bubble of self satisfaction, which even the tragedies of terrorism and war have failed to puncture. I want to live in a global democracy, a world without borders, where money serves people and not the other way around. I am a Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Jew. I recently completed a draft of my first novel, Vanishing Point.

"About Sarah Palin" by Someone Who Knows Her
This post, apparently circulated originally as a private e-mail, is making the rounds of political blogs today and deserves to be seen here. It first appeared on the web as a comment to this article in the Washington Independent. Because...more »

Last Days as Emperor
The Bush administration is pressuring the Iraqi government to sign an agreement in which they will be trampled forever by American troops.A secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely, regardless of the...more »

The Cruelty Principle
The same Moroccan friend who told me, the first time we met, that "Morocco is a cruel country" later explained what he called the "Arab mentality" in which rulers are abusive toward their people not because they deserve it, but...more »

That worked really well for Herbert Hoover, didn't it?
The trick for Democrats is to go beyond simply responding to the mess Republicans left, and seize this once-in-a-generation opportunity to forge a new governing agenda.
Hillary would have been a solid nominee if all we were looking for was competence in cleaning up the mess. But Obama has the vision to innovate a new future for the Democratic Party and the nation.

I propose that McCain withdraw from public view until after November 4, so as not to politicize the election.

Greg, your headline is misleading. I think the key wording is what you highlighted, "I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands," with "the plan on the table" referring to the Paulson plan as proposed. I think everyone knows that plan is dead in the water, and Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are authoring a Democratic alternative, 98% of whose provisions have already been accepted by the White House. THAT is the plan that could be passed later today. So I agree that McCain is irrelevant to this debate, but what he said is technically correct.

It's true that Colorado looks good, but your scenario may yet be overoptimistic.
Obama is a lot better off with Ohio than without it.

I can't begin to express the wrongheadedness of your premise, M.J. What are we supposed to do if we want to win, put up worse candidates than the Republicans? Are you saying no polititican with a coherent plan and the capacity to explain it can win elections? I say this self-defeating pessimism is what is killing us. Obama should ignore you and be his proudly intelligent self.

Click on the links in the first paragraph (unfortunately, they deleted my correctly formatted version of this post) and you will find the author's name.
