  • Nasty, Low & Mean

We all know how Republicans conduct campaigns.  Not just the Rove/Bushes or Baker/Bushes - but almost any Republican. The mindset is distinctly Manichean. The rationale is:    1.  Republicans are supposed to Win   2.  Republicans are "Good for America!"    ...more »

  • President Kennedy Predicted Our Times ...

I just read the article in Salon "Obama/Kennedy vs. McCain/Goldwater" by David Talbot. I was struck by the following quotation of John F. Kennedy describing what would happen if we took the posture which President Bush does:   ... Kennedy,...more »

  • Senator Clinton's Next Step

I don't see as realistic any scenario where Senator Obama asks Ms. Clinton to be his running mate.  I, or course, could be wrong - I supported Sen. Clinton in the primaries here in Georgia (a lifetime ago!) after being...more »

  • That truly shows the difference between Nexis and Google.

Those 6 million hits, based on the way you typed the search term, included everything with McCain, everything with "old" (like skold, mold, fold, gold, et al.) as well as stories from the WSJ like "McCain and the Old Gray Lady" and TPMCafe | Talking Points Memo | "Condescension" (Block This Trope!)

Google does not do the job which Nexis was created to do.

  • Just the simple and straightforward point.

There're too many people who seem to think it will be some sort of surprise if McCain campaigns negatively.

  • First, how can potential "Executive Privilege" be used as a shield against investigation of a potential crime? I know, I know - this is the Bush Administration ...

Second, did Mr. Rove find out about the first Seigelman prosecution in the newspaper and then push the second prosecution?

These are not difficult questions to think up.

  • The article I linked to was about the debates Kennedy and Goldwater planned. Kennedy was shaping a plan to get the US out of Vietnam and the '64 campaign was to feature that plan.

  • I know President Kennedy was reading a speech written for him - he's not magical - but it is striking how clarity of thought brings out these inevitable conclusions.

  • Several issues really, really bug me about this...

How is it possible that illegal behavior is privileged?

Are private acts of White House Employees not involving official duties covered by Executive Privilege?

Does this assertion of Executive Privilege constitute an admission that the directives to prosecute Don Siegelman came out of the White House?

"Made 'is Bones" is the most apt description I have ever encountered for this!

I can just hear Karl - "This thing of Ours will protect you."

  • I'd say his carbon production is a good investment because the bulk of it comes while he is trying to educate us.

It's even better that he also does so much to offset his production that his NET production is closer to zero than for most people.

  • I have argued since the 1980 campaign that right wing claims that America society is rotting were correct - but that the rot was coming from the top.

I think Mr. Chait's argument fits in very well with my conclusion.

Noblesse Oblige used to be a real force in society, but that has been replaced with the idea that the amount of money one has shows one's worth - including one's moral superiority.

  • So maybe the idea was to replace Bud Cummins in order to get Rove's favorite capo into a USA position, and to retaliate against Carol Lam and David Iglasias to send a message.

Then, after the situation changed in November, it morphed into a way to get more "good guys" into USA positions.

The frightening part of this story remains the idea that some portion of the other 85 USA's played ball.
